Summertime at Rainbow Point Lodge

Where is our 2017 season going??  August 4th today and it feels like we should be just getting started.  We have been keeping up on news through our Facebook Page  whenever we had a minute this summer, and sorry to say my Blog has been quiet with the lack of free time to update it.

Right now we are having our most fabulous summer weather of the season, and we're loving it.  It was on the verge of too hot earlier this week, but now we're just right.  Fishing has been best early and late in the day for walleyes lately with the heat, and the northern, bass and perch have been going nuts any time of the day.  This week's trophy so far is a 26" walleye.  The season topper, (so far!) was a 31.5" walleye caught by Nick from Florida, and there have been many  trophies caught and released by guests throughout the spring and summer in between those sizes.  Perrault Lake never disappoints!






We've had the pleasure of hosting many families over the last couple of months.  Even a 4 generation group. Those huge kid smiles like this have been fabulous to see!   This young lady comes up with her grandparents and family every July, and she has become quite the fisher girl over the years...Way to go Grace!



 If this fall is going to be anything like the last few years, we'll expect a continuation of beautiful weather and excellent fishing pretty much till October.

Bear hunting will be soon be starting here at the Lodge, with opening day the 15th of August.  Anticipating a great fall hunt with a lot of anxious hunters!    Grouse season opens up September 15th.  What a great time of year to combine walking or riding the trails for  grouse, and fishing Perrault Lake.

If you still have some vacation time to use up, or have the flexibility of retirement, give us a shout.  We still have some openings for late summer & fall, and our fall specials are hard to beat!   Some weeks for 2018 are already getting tight for space also, so plan early if you have a definite date you need to schedule.

Thinking sunshine and fishing during the deep freeze!

Record cold temps is pretty much the norm for most of Canada and the USA right now, and we sure hope everyone stays safe and warm.   There have been many days with wind chill down to -45 in the last week up at Perrault Falls, so January is making up for a mind December.  Throughout the cold snap, it's looking forward to something great to come that can get you through!  We were going through some pictures today from the past summer, and knew we should share some of them to warm you up too!

 David comes up with his brother and dad every August, and they never have a problem finding all the walleyes & perch they are targeting when they are up.

Delayed Spring Opener at Rainbow Point Lodge

With all the uncertainty of the ice conditions at thaw here at the Lodge we encouraged our opening week guests to come a week later, and thankfully the groups were able to do just that.  We hated to think of people traveling all those distances and not be assured of getting out on the water for opener. All of you out there may have to wait just a little bit longer for some new fishing photos!  Memorial Day weekend will be fantastic!

We are all just so excited to see the sun shining yesterday and today at Perrault Falls.   With the heat and the few days of rain before it, most of our snowbanks are nearly gone.  The lake took a kicking also.  The forecast is for the temperatures to drop again tomorrow for the rest of the week, back down in the low-mid 30's at night, and only about 50 as highs, so things will slow down again.   It's still hard to predict when the ice will go out, but we'll keep you posted via Facebook, and later on the Blog.

Memorial Day Weekend is coming up in the US, and if you don't have plans already, you might want to take a quick trip up to take in some fantastic fishing on Perrault Lake.  Have some availability, and can work out a package for you either for the long weekend, or the week.  Give us a shout if you're interested.  That fresh walleye sizzling in the pan will be well worth the trip!

Spring Perrault Lake Ice Update

I know there are a lot of you that are pretty anxious to hear some news from the "Great White North". Perrault Falls, like most places in the central states and provinces, is having a slow start to spring.   We've had lots of wind the last several days so that's helped kick down the snow a lot.

We had a few flurries today, then sleet, then rain, and then over again.  At least it isn't freezing overnight anymore (that we have heard in the forecast anyway)        

Looking out over Perrault Lake today, there was a bit of water at the shore; most of which was sitting on top of the ice.  Lakes are pretty much iced in all over the region and on into Manitoba.

Staff are all anxious to get working this spring.     Usually they are starting work this weekend at the Lodge, but with the snow cover we have put them off to start after at least next weekend.  Can't rake leaves with snowbanks.

 On a brighter note, it won't be long before the Blog will have more pictures like this one!  Think Fishing and Think Summer!  It's coming!  We have a few spots left for the prime fishing during the last couple weeks of May, just after ice-out.  If you have some time to sneak away for a few days before June, give us a shout and we'll see what we can do to get you into some great walleye & northern fishing.  The fish will be hungry and so will you!

Winter Blues? Think of the lazy days of summer fishing on Perrault Lake instead!

"Crazy" is about the only word that comes to mind when I think about the winter that most of North America has experienced since late November.    Perrault Falls has gotten more snow this year than it has in many years, and it's only February.  Minus 35 and lower seems to have been the norm on the mercury; we're not talking wind chill!  Bob & I are glad to have escaped the cold for part of the winter, and keep in close touch with Shorty back at the Lodge, who's keeping an eye on things.  His wife Fran tried an experiment talked about on the news where a cup of boiling hot water is thrown into the air, and affirmed that the water does indeed "whoosh" and immediately disappears into the cold winter air in a puff.  Gotta amuse yourself somehow in the cold!  The otters don't' seem to mind the cold and are still out playing at the falls in front of the lodge, enjoying the very little bit of open water to be found.


Enough talk about the cold!  We need to talk about happier times, and the lazy days of summer; kicking back, and relaxing on the lake, fishing pole in hand.   No schedule to follow, and forget the office!   Ok.. are you there now?



It's great to see the smiles on the kids' faces when they know they've got supper;  never mind the smiles on all the grown-up kids' faces when they bring in their stringers of fish and talk about the big ones that were caught and released or that got away… this time!


It's always so much fun for us to see the transformation in our guests from being stressed out to realizing they can actually relax as they settle into their vacation homes at the Lodge.

Who wouldn't want to listen to the loons in the distance instead of the cars and phones?


We are lucky to live in such a fantastic part of Canada and be able to share our bit of paradise with you all.


Sport show season is on throughout many States and Provinces this winter, and as many of you are aware, we are not attending any of these personally this year.   As you shop around in person, on line, or through the magazines, for your  next trip, we hope you remember that
"We Always Remember You Have a Choice" in your vacation destinations.   Bob and I, and our fantastic staff will always strive to make sure your vacation is perfect in every way.

Looking forward to seeing so many of our regular guests coming back in their usual spots, and to meeting all the new people that have been contacting us to reserve their cottages.  If you haven't made your plans yet, give us a shout.  There are still some spots left here and there, so hopefully we can accommodate you for the time you have off.

Happy Thanksgiving to our U.S. Friends

Just a quick note as we think of all of our guests and friends south of the border celebrating their Thanksgiving tomorrow.  With all the nasty weather we are hearing about, we hope your travels are safe ones.  We celebrated Thanksgiving up here in Canada the 1st weekend of October, so it's been awhile since our Thanksgiving turkey.  Enjoy!

We have continued to get hammered with plenty of snow almost daily up at Perrault Falls, with about 2 feet fallen all together so far.  Our bay has been iced up for a good week, and the main lake is just about frozen over.  Perrault is always one of the last in the area to ice up.   The sunny days of summer seem like a long time ago already!  Plans are under way for our projects for next spring already, but the work will wait till the grass pokes out next year.

I'm awake Mike! Just easing into the winter!!

Hello Everyone:  Well it's that time of year again when Mike Baumann, from Milwaukee, wakes me up with a (where is the latest blog???) question, and I have to get it together and write something for you to read.  Feel free to add a comment to my blogs so I know you're watching!  I have been relying on Gale to update the Rainbow Point Lodge Facebook page, and I guess, not bore you with my Fall rambling.
     Just to recap the summer, it was great!!!! We had a slower start to the spring, regarding early fishermen, but as people learn that the spring fishing is Fantastic, we are seeing a renewed interest in this time of year. After the opening week things picked up and Summer was on full speed. The fishing all summer was, as I say every year, Phenominal. All you have to do is take a look at our photo link on the web page to see some of the great fish that were taken this past summer and previous years. One of our indicators to the fishing success in any given week is the smiles on the new guests that have never been here before. This lake, is and always will be, an easy lake to learn, because of it's size. The nice mix of walleye, northern, bass, perch, etc. also makes it very diverse. There are plenty of small and trophy sized fish in each species that always make us smile, because we know that the reproduction rate is always consistent.
    Gale and I just finished draining the last cabin 2 weeks ago and are still a few days away from being "totally ready" for the winter. There is a lot more involved in shutting down the cabins etc. than just pulling the plug and locking the gate. Today I am going to be pulling my airplane up on dry ground for the winter, as the shore line is starting to get a bit of ice on it. I wish I could fly it a bit more but the summer is almost too busy and now the weather is staring to freeze. Here is a picture from last week. It's gone but the snow plow was on the highway that night and they layer the salt on the road!! Just more reason to pack for the trip south.
 We are working on our winter promotion and are going to do more print advertising and try to get a larger online presence. In case you haven't heard the All Canada Show's that we have been attending for almost 30 years, has declared bankruptcy. The show is being resurrected in the Chicago market this spring, by a group of people that worked with the original show. They are trying to improve the show, and it's attendance, and will move to other markets next year if they are successful this winter. As you all know, we have been doing the Green Bay show each year for the last few decades, and with the demise of the AC Show in Green Bay this up coming winter we will obviously not be there.  We will keep you up to date if we decide to travel to one of the other shows in Wisc.
 Below are a couple of pictures taken as Gale & I waited at 6AM for the fog to lift so we could get to a trail down the lake, that we walk for moose. Heard and gave some calls, but no moose showed their face that day.  Had our nets and gear along too hoping that we might catch the whitefish running in the river.  Too early for the whitefish, and a great day to take a trip down the river.

Pictures from Beautiful, Icy Perrault Lake

After a mixed weather bag of a day, cold, warm, rain, wind, sun… we were treated to some fantastic sights.

Right after a thunder storm went through, we had an amazing ice fog roll quickly over the bay.  Bob posted several pictures on our Facebook Page.  If you are not on Facebook, I've added one his shots here for you too.

Then we just had another evening shower go through, and this fabulous rainbow showed up.. It was a double, but I wasn't quick enough. Think the end of the Rainbow is on the best fishing spot on opening day?  The groups coming this weekend will get to find out!

Anxious to see the changes in the lake ice after the winds tonight.   I took a quick trip to Dryden for business earlier today, and by the time I came back, Eagle Lake, Cliff Lake & Trail Lake were open.  Cedar looked to be starting to open up, and our bay on Perrault Lake is looking very close.  It's been quite a few years since we've had ice go out right at opening weekend, and it looks like "maybe??" that is what we might see.  We'll keep you posted!

New Years Hello!

Hello everyone! Well, we made it through the Christmas season unscratched and through the New Years party ( I haven't stayed up till 3AM in a long time) We went to some friends for the evening and enjoyed the fireworks in the neighbourhood from a roof top deck. I must tell you we were in the Keys and it was 75 degrees :))

On the serious side Gale and I wish you all a Very Happy New Year and hope that a visit to Rainbow is in your plans. We are looking forward to the opening day of fishing as we always do but in the meantime are getting ready to go to Green Bay for the one sport show we are doing, on the 24th. - 27th. of Jan. If you are in the area, or want to bring some friends in to meet us, come on in we would be glad to see you.

By now you have all received our new price list and have had the opportunity to read our Christmas note on the web page. If you have not go to www.rainbowpoint.com. We will be doing all of our Christmas and other promotional information by email from now on so if you don't have your email address with us or would like a hard copy mailed to you just let us know.

Some of the summer weeks are full or near full, so if you know your vacation schedule, give us a shout soon so you know you'll have your week scheduled in.

We have been doing a little fishing of our own down here and so far Gale has me beat in the Big fish category. I must say that someone has to run the boat, reel in the other lines and gaff the fish and guide to the perfect spot etc. so she can accomplish the fish catching prowess that she keeps telling me about. With the big buck she got last fall, and the fishing luck she is having I will probably just hang up my guiding licence. This is a picture of Gales black fin tuna and a wahoo that she caught within 20 minutes of each other.   We enjoy getting our fishing fix in down south since we don't get much time to fish while we are keeping the Lodge running in the summer.    The fish are tasty of course, but you know, nothing beats a fresh Canadian Walleye fish fry!

White Christmas? and New Photos!

Well, there is no question about it..  There will be a white Christmas at Rainbow Point Lodge.  The lake is frozen over, and about 6" of snow covers the ground at this point.   Sounds like most of you in the mid-west and central states may have to import some of the white stuff!

We have just popped a quick note in the mail to people on our guest list with some current information, and will be sending out a new e-mail newsletter in the next few days to our subscribers.  Keep in the loop of what's new at the Lodge through a subscription to the e-newsletter.

Grouse, Bear, Moose & Fish - Love this Place!

Happy Fall!

Can't believe it is already late September!  The summer flew by for everyone here at the Lodge.  Things are still fairly busy around here, especially since all of our staff have gone for the season.  Bob is out guiding, and I found myself with a few extra minutes to drop you all a quick update.  Leaves were slow to turn, but are now showing their colors after we got a very hard frost late last week.  

Grouse hunters in this week have had really good success, and nice weather to go along with it.   As the leaves start to fall the hunting will be all the better.  Fishing has been slower the last couple of weeks as the lake was in transition, but the groups that where here enjoyed some of the nicest fishing weather they could have asked for in this time of year.  We should be seeing some great action starting again with the fishing groups this week.   If you want to plan a last minute trip up for some fall grouse hunting & fishing give us a shout.

Our bear hunt finished up last week with the last couple of happy, successful hunters heading back to the States with their trophies.  A good successful hunting season overall and hunts for 2012 are already booking in.  

This week is our archery moose hunt, and it was off to a great start with Tom Coon getting a bull the 1st morning out!  Congratulations Tom.   The moose are responding to calls very well, so it'll make for an exciting week for the guys here.

Early Early Spring at Perrault Falls

In 26 years we don't remember as early a spring as this one! Perrault Lake is black, and we wouldn't doubt if it was out before the weekend. Last year we we were still driving a truck and 4wheelers out on the lake and ice fishing at this time.   Hard to believe the difference.  The bay at camp is nearly open.  Absolutely no snow on the ground.

Spring has already been Springing!!!!!!!

Hi Everyone:

Only 6 more weeks till fishing season!!!! I know many of you have a countdown going yourselves. For all of you who have planned your spring trips, there will be no fear of ice not being out in time for spring opener. Like many of you, we are seeing a very early arrival of warm spring weather. so there is next to no snow already, and the lake ice won't take long to go out with the continued warm temps. This early warm weather is unheard of for us this time of year.

A bonus for us for the early spring is that we will be able to get to the many jobs we want to do before the season starts which is just fine with us. Some years it is a scramble to get things ship shape by the time the 1st guests arrive as we are often still seeing snow and deep frost into late April. Besides and week long raking job and cabin spring cleaning, there are always many repairs and improvements to be made. This spring will see some additional dock renovations and deck staining to keep things looking good, along with many other projects that I won't bore you with. You'll see what's new when you get here.

I was talking to George a couple of days ago and he is "winter rested" and ready to go. Just a few weeks ago he and his wife Dianne were blessed with the birth of their 1st grandchildren - twins (boy and a girl) Big congratulations goes out to their family!

We have hired some brand new dock staff and I am really looking forward to working with them and hope this will work into a long time relationship for them working with our team.

We are all looking forward to seeing everyone again, and also meeting all you new first timers to the Lodge! If you have the spring fishing itch, we have some openings for early season, and have a special running for the 1st 3 weeks that may be hard to pass up. Check out our website for details!

We are getting geared up to head out to the All Canada Sport Show in Green Bay, Wisconsin, starting Thursday. Anxious to see so many of our good friends, guests and future guests there as always!

Wildlife Artist Anthony J. Padgett to Host Contest for Military Personnel with Fishing Trip to Canada During All Canada Show Event

Wildlife Artist Anthony J. Padgett supports U.S. Military with a contest to win a Canadian fishing trip for two during the 2010 All Canada Show tour. All presently serving or honorably discharged Active Military, Guard, Reserve or Retired are eligible to enter.
Anthony is a renowned wildlife artist with recent accomplishments that include the 2008 Ducks Unlimited International Artist of the Year Award and 2009 Louisiana State Waterfowl Stamp Award. Anthony’s love of the outdoors is depicted in many of his paintings. Being an avid fisherman and outdoorsman who enjoys fishing in Canada was the idea behind this contest as an opportunity to say thanks to US Military personnel.
Anthony’s love of the outdoors and wildlife came at an early age when even then the urge turn memories into drawings had begun. A self-taught artist, Anthony’s career as a wildlife artist has spanned almost twenty years. His work has taken him all across the United States and Canada. The contest will be held during the All Canada Show tour. Anthony has a booth at the All Canada Show and entry forms can be filled out and turned in at his booth. The winner and their guest will be able to choose a week in either July or August 2010 to fish with Anthony. Rainbow Point Lodge in Perrault Falls, Ontario, Canada is the destination for that week of fishing.

Fishing & Hunting Licence Update

Hello Everyone:

Just a quick update on the Ontario Outdoors Card that was started last summer. If you visited last year for fishing or hunting, you were issued a Temporary Outdoors Card at the time you got your fishing or hunting licence. (Was a large pink piece of paper)

Most of you should have received a permanent Ontario Outdoors Card by now. It is the size of driver's licence, and you will need to bring that back up with you next summer to speed up your next fishing or hunting licence, and save you paying the Card fee again ($9.00).

If you got one of the temporary licences last year and didn't receive your Outdoors Card, you can follow up with the Ministry of Natural Resources at the Card Centre - 1-800-387-7011. Make sure you follow up with them at least 6 weeks before your next visit.

Worst case scenerio - you don't get your card before your trip - not that bad. You'll just need to purchase another one.

Another new thing for licences this coming season is a One Day Fishing Licence for non-residents. This licence provides for conservation limits, and is really only beneficial cost-wise if you are fishing for just 1 day total. Thought I'd pass that info on for you though, in case it may apply to any of you.

Fall Report!! "So Far"!!

Well: We are catching our breath after a busy bear hunting season. George and I have been baiting since late July, trying to give all our hunting guests the best possible chance at a black bear. Most people don't realize how much work goes into the pre-baiting part of the hunt as all they see is the bait when they get there. This year for instance we went through more than 4000 Lbs. of bait and lots of gas, nails, lumber, sweat etc. The summer was a cool one as we all know, and the blueberry crop (that the bears depend on) was roughly 2-3 weeks late so it put the peak of the season for them right in the middle of our hunt. This makes the hunt a bit tougher but we tried as hard as we could to keep the baits active. We had a great mix of hunters from all over the States with many of them taking home a nice animal.

On Thusday, last week, Rick Mather from Mukwonago took this nice 500+ pounder. The animal weighed 475 dressed out with 30-40 lbs. left in the bush. No need to embelish the size just have a look.

I sure want to thank all my hunters this year and look forward to seeing you again in the future for another hunt or even a fishing trip.


The fishing has been a bit funny lately with respect to the locations they are being caught at this time of year. We are finding that the walleyes will be active one day in 25-30 feet and the next day someone will come in and say they were biting well in 10ft. Go figure! The musky are really becoming agressive and many 45+ inch fish have been caught and released. (waiting for pictures from the fishermen!!). Bass and perch have also been quite easily caught in large numbers.


We are presently waiting for the fall grouse hunt that starts tomorrow. This is a great time of year as the leaves are changing and the colours are beautiful. You can combine great fishing with leasurely walks in the bush for birds and small game. Totally relaxing!


Today the temperature is going to be close to 80F. and I may even turn on the air conditioning as it hasn't run much this year. We are having nicer temps. etc. now, than we had for most of the summer.


"Enough Complaining" about the weather and the economy etc. and lets look forward to the winter and the ALL new season next year. I am going to try and look at the positive side of the future, as I tend to be a bit of a pessimist looking forward but what do I know? We are going to announce our fall-spring promotional travel schedule soon and also finalize our printed and internet advertizing. We will continue to try and keep Rainbow Point Lodge at the top of your list of vacation plans and hope that you will continue to return year after year. We are going to be running our Fall Archery Moose hunt next week and I will do another blog after that to bring you up to date.

Morning Mist on Perrault Lake

Just thought I'd share a couple of pictures we took this morning. There was a thick fog around the lake this morning, and just as it was lifting there a beautiful defined fog line on the lake. While down at the dock taking the pictures, we noticed our loons were back, and were swimming in the bay in front of the fish house.

We have been getting lots of phone calls and e-mails from everyone checking on the ice. Glad to hear that you're all anxious for opener. We sure are! Bob was even out yesterday with a blow torch trying to melt some ice & snow covering one of our frozen waterlines - Now that's what I call helping out mother nature! (should have gotten a picture of that site). Lots of wind yesterday - the bay in front of camp may clear out soon.
