Thinking sunshine and fishing during the deep freeze!

Record cold temps is pretty much the norm for most of Canada and the USA right now, and we sure hope everyone stays safe and warm.   There have been many days with wind chill down to -45 in the last week up at Perrault Falls, so January is making up for a mind December.  Throughout the cold snap, it's looking forward to something great to come that can get you through!  We were going through some pictures today from the past summer, and knew we should share some of them to warm you up too!

 David comes up with his brother and dad every August, and they never have a problem finding all the walleyes & perch they are targeting when they are up.

We'll be heading off to Wisconsin the middle of next week to attend the All Canada Sport Show in Green Bay, running January 15th to the 18th.  If you're nearby, hope you get a chance to stop by and see us.  If you're a Packer Fan, we imagine you'll be visiting before Sunday's game.

I'm awake Mike! Just easing into the winter!!

Hello Everyone:  Well it's that time of year again when Mike Baumann, from Milwaukee, wakes me up with a (where is the latest blog???) question, and I have to get it together and write something for you to read.  Feel free to add a comment to my blogs so I know you're watching!  I have been relying on Gale to update the Rainbow Point Lodge Facebook page, and I guess, not bore you with my Fall rambling.
     Just to recap the summer, it was great!!!! We had a slower start to the spring, regarding early fishermen, but as people learn that the spring fishing is Fantastic, we are seeing a renewed interest in this time of year. After the opening week things picked up and Summer was on full speed. The fishing all summer was, as I say every year, Phenominal. All you have to do is take a look at our photo link on the web page to see some of the great fish that were taken this past summer and previous years. One of our indicators to the fishing success in any given week is the smiles on the new guests that have never been here before. This lake, is and always will be, an easy lake to learn, because of it's size. The nice mix of walleye, northern, bass, perch, etc. also makes it very diverse. There are plenty of small and trophy sized fish in each species that always make us smile, because we know that the reproduction rate is always consistent.
    Gale and I just finished draining the last cabin 2 weeks ago and are still a few days away from being "totally ready" for the winter. There is a lot more involved in shutting down the cabins etc. than just pulling the plug and locking the gate. Today I am going to be pulling my airplane up on dry ground for the winter, as the shore line is starting to get a bit of ice on it. I wish I could fly it a bit more but the summer is almost too busy and now the weather is staring to freeze. Here is a picture from last week. It's gone but the snow plow was on the highway that night and they layer the salt on the road!! Just more reason to pack for the trip south.
 We are working on our winter promotion and are going to do more print advertising and try to get a larger online presence. In case you haven't heard the All Canada Show's that we have been attending for almost 30 years, has declared bankruptcy. The show is being resurrected in the Chicago market this spring, by a group of people that worked with the original show. They are trying to improve the show, and it's attendance, and will move to other markets next year if they are successful this winter. As you all know, we have been doing the Green Bay show each year for the last few decades, and with the demise of the AC Show in Green Bay this up coming winter we will obviously not be there.  We will keep you up to date if we decide to travel to one of the other shows in Wisc.
 Below are a couple of pictures taken as Gale & I waited at 6AM for the fog to lift so we could get to a trail down the lake, that we walk for moose. Heard and gave some calls, but no moose showed their face that day.  Had our nets and gear along too hoping that we might catch the whitefish running in the river.  Too early for the whitefish, and a great day to take a trip down the river.

Support our Troops Draw

We are getting geared up to head out to the All Canada Sport Show in Green Bay, Wisconsin, starting Thursday. Anxious to see so many of our good friends, guests and future guests there as always!

Rainbow Point Lodge is happy to be part of a wonderful promotion with Wildlife Artist Tony Padgett this year in support of the US Troops serving the USA. Here is the total information on the trip Rainbow Point Lodge will be donating to this worthwhile cause.

Wildlife Artist Anthony J. Padgett to Host Contest for Military Personnel with Fishing Trip to Canada During All Canada Show Event

Wildlife Artist Anthony J. Padgett supports U.S. Military with a contest to win a Canadian fishing trip for two during the 2010 All Canada Show tour. All presently serving or honorably discharged Active Military, Guard, Reserve or Retired are eligible to enter.
Anthony is a renowned wildlife artist with recent accomplishments that include the 2008 Ducks Unlimited International Artist of the Year Award and 2009 Louisiana State Waterfowl Stamp Award. Anthony’s love of the outdoors is depicted in many of his paintings. Being an avid fisherman and outdoorsman who enjoys fishing in Canada was the idea behind this contest as an opportunity to say thanks to US Military personnel.
Anthony’s love of the outdoors and wildlife came at an early age when even then the urge turn memories into drawings had begun. A self-taught artist, Anthony’s career as a wildlife artist has spanned almost twenty years. His work has taken him all across the United States and Canada. Whether its researching polar bears in the arctic or watching an eagle soar above, a realistic portrayal of wildlife in their natural environment are trademarks of his style.
The All Canada Show attracts over 300 Canadian fishing and hunting lodges. The angler and hunter can book their adventure directly with the lodge owner during the show. The All Canada Show will make stops in eleven cities starting January 9th in St. Louis, Missouri and continuing through February 21st in Dallas, Texas.
The contest will be held during the All Canada Show tour. Anthony has a booth at the All Canada Show and entry forms can be filled out and turned in at his booth. The winner and their guest will be able to choose a week in either July or August 2010 to fish with Anthony. Rainbow Point Lodge in Perrault Falls, Ontario, Canada is the destination for that week of fishing.
“As Americans we are fortunate to have so many brave men and women in our military keeping us out of harm’s way” says Anthony. “I want to share my love of the outdoors with a soldier and give them an opportunity to relax, have fun, and enjoy a week of fishing. This is my small way of saying thanks.”

WOW The season so far!!!!!!!!!

We got off to a very cold start (weather wise), but the fishing has been nothing short of exceptional. I know this sounds like a sales pitch but after owning this place for 26 years I can honestly say the fishing keeps getting better and the blend of size from the, small to the trophy, tells me that the spawns are good and there are more great years to look forward to. Since my last post regarding personal issues, I have received many letters addressing that, and really do appreciate the thoughts.
We have not had the warmest spring to say the least but the last two weeks of fantastic weather have started to make up for it. Gale is going to busy with the photo album update as we have tons of great pictures to post from the past few weeks so keep you eye's open for that. For those of you that said you will send the pictures when you get home--- we have received some of them but not all!
For those of you that remember our dog Kasey, we had to put her down last week as she was suffering from both old age and a terminal illness. (Not been the best year I can remember!) I promise not to depress you any more but she was a part of the Lodge.
I went golfing the other day and I cannot remember the score (must be old age) but it was nice to get out, since the last 9 holes I golfed last year (pretty sad Eh!). I hate to get out to often as I usually creates a crowd (helping me look for balls). Bill you can attest to that!
There are a few of you pilot guest's out there that know I have been looking for another plane but as of yet I have not found the right one, but I will know when I see it (that's the update Mike, so far!) After flying for 35+ years, the last few years without a plane are taking there toll on me as I watch the other guy's fly over. Gale is still talking to me, so it can't be that bad of an idea, or else she hope's I will grow out of it!

Do I Need a Passport to Travel to Canada?

With everyone busy making their plans for fishing and hunting trips next summer, the question of "Do I Need a Passport" comes up quite often. There have been a lot of changes in the last few years regarding border crossing requirements between the U.S. and Canada. Air travellers have required passports for some time, but The US Dept. of Homeland Security regulations affecting land border crossing will require everyone to have a passport to re-enter the United States starting June 1st of 2009.



Passports have long been the best form of identification for crossing the border. We encourage everyone to get their passport applications in early to avoid any last minute hold-ups on your trips. Youth under the age of 16 are exempt from the passport requirement, but again, we do encourage everyone to get the passports regardless, both for safety and for ease of travel.



There is a less expensive PASS (People Access Security Service) available in the US as well, which will suffice for land crossing from Canada, but not for other travel you may need to do in the future.

Don't forget to contact us for your reservations before the New Year to avoid disappointment. We start our sport shows start early in January, and many weeks will be booked up by then.

Sights & Sounds of the Falls in February

In between the bitter cold and wind we've had so far in 2008, we finally had a perfect sunny day for a nice long walk. I ended up eventually over near the Falls, which looked and sounded fantastic in the sunshine. The animals were out enjoying the day too, but I wasn't able to get the camera out to catch them. There's a pair of otters living right in front of the Lodge at the top of the Falls, there was a muskrat at the falls, and I was excited, but leary too, seeing a wolf trotting off down the ditch past the lodge.

Thought I'd share this video clip of Perrault Falls in the winter with you. It was beautiful in person, & I hope you enjoy it in video too!

All Canada Sport Shows coming up

Also, remember that you can look after getting US Passport applications started while you are at the All Canada Show, so you're ready for next year!
